Three Paws Down, One to Go
I've clipped the toenails on three of Lily's paws and have one left I hope to tackle tonight. Lily used to be the worst at letting me clip her nails. It was amazing all the contortions she put her body through and the biting to stop the clipping of the toenails. I haven't cut past the quick, but I think one of the times I had her groomed as a puppy she was traumatized by the groomer. So at first I was wrapping her in a towel while my mom held her and I clipped her toenails. Not exactly a solution that will help her get over her fear. So I decided that I would sit her in my lap when she was very tired and clip two nails at a time and then give her a treat afterward and I would do it every week. The first few weeks it took me about an hour to clip two nails. I didn't pick her up, just picked up her foot. Every time she took her foot away or bit me I told her she was fine and grabbed the foot again. It took a long time, but now I can clip an entire foot before she tries to bite me. So I do one foot at a time and reward it with a treat. My dog is treat crazy - in fact, she only works for food and feels like I completely screwed her over if I don't give her a treat and will bark at me for awhile until she realizes it's useless and then will bark some more to vent her frustration. I love it when she does that in front of company. I keep trying to remind her that we have an agreement that she will only be cute and agreeable when company is over. I should have gotten it in writing.
