Reading the Rapid City Journal this morning I came across an article about a shooting range that is being built 4 miles from Bear Butte. The first problem is that the city had initially appropriated funds to the development of this shooting range improperly. Money that was supposed to be earmarked for the poor. I may be crazy, but I don't think people who use the shooting range are poor, especially since they have purchased guns and ammunition. But secondly, Bear Butte is a holy place to the Native Americans. Thousands visit every year to leave offerings and people are restricted from disturbing the religious ceremonies. How can you worship and meditate when guns are heard firing in the distance? Were it me, I would no longer be able to worship there because I find the sound of gunfire very disturbing. We've desecrated another site important to the Native Americans. I guess we'll never learn.
