Just what I needed: a Monday and Tuesday off from work.
I really shouldn't have. I mean, you saw Friday's blog. I have too much work to do. But... I did anyway. I headed to Wisconsin to attend a family event and wash my grandma's windows (awww, I'm the nicest grandchild ever! Ok, perhaps my cousin Derek wins that honor because he comes over every week to take care of her lawn).
I didn't leave until Sunday at the butt crack of dawn (seriously). I got to Grandma's house about 11 am and we headed to David and Ingrid's house around 12:30. They just bought the cutest cabin on the river right down the street from where my great, great grandparents lived and where David lived until he was 10 years old. I only hope when I can afford a house in the twin cities it has as much (hopefully more) square footage than this cabin. We spent the entire afternoon catching up with family. I saw my aunt Deanna and uncle Joe for the first time (I think) since my grandpa died (that was in '93) and met my cousin Jesse whom they adopted a few years ago. Do they live in Alaska? No. Just an hour an a half from my grandma. I've been to see my grandma at least twice a year if not more since I moved to Minneapolis and I think I've seen her more than they have. It's a strange family dynamic.
Monday I set to work washing the storm windows. I didn't get much else done (though the interior windows weren't so dirty) because I had a major headache that multiple ibuprofen couldn't touch. I also went into town and got some new window shades. My grandma is incredibly resourceful (she survived the depression) and when the bottom of the old shade would wear out, she would cut it off and tape it up again with the little piece of wood. She gave in pretty easily when I told her they were really inexpensive to replace. I took a nap after I put up the new shades thinking that would kill my headache (nope) and then we met Margie for dinner at the Villager. It was a great ending to a dreary, overcast day. Plus, I discovered it had been a caffeine headache. I added caffeine, it went away.
I headed home Tuesday morning at about 8 after grandma and I had a discussion about whether homosexuality was a choice or not. I almost made it the whole weekend without political discussions but they kept having Rosie on television and my grandma would say "She's that lesbian" every time. I just couldn't keep my trap shut. I now have an assignment to look up all the bible verses that mention homosexuality so I can have a better argument because she says "the bible just says it's wrong" but doesn't quote the exact verses (Footy - can you help me out?). I have homework from visiting my grandma. Nice.
Yesterday was so beautiful I was able to finish putting the garden to bed (I added some compost and a layer of soil for the winter), finally put my garden cages away, finally put the window air conditioner away and finished the gift for my coworkers birthday today. Today I have to work my rear off this morning, attend the birthday lunch and spend all afternoon downtown in meetings. I can hardly wait.
